General question about l2j server legality?

Post by venam »

I know that the coding of l2j server is legal, since i have searched the whole forum and google about it. :P but hosting an l2j server and accepting donations and helping users to play lineage 2 on a private server by modifying the hosts file in windows, is it legal? I am asking this question because i dont want to start a server than in the end will be shut down and i am going to be sued like l2extreme. I found that was closed by fbi. or something is different? can someone explain me please what i CAN do with l2jserver that is legal and what i CANNOT do?

you cannot modify client, changing hosts file (which is the player's own property) is allowed

If i create an l2jServer and have a membership subscription for users to pay, will i be legal? Does the hosts edit works?

Code: Select all

127.0.0.1       localhostyour external IP L2authd.lineage2.com
Instead this is for you (if the server is on your pc)

Code: Select all

127.0.0.1       localhost127.0.0.1 L2authd.lineage2.com
If you will set good ipconfig.xml and open the ports, yes hosts file will work

I have always had it disabled, got some e-mails from NCZ0ft a couple times, so I explained to them that I can't launch any programs after l2 is opened if gameguard is running (which is because of comodo firewall, but I ain't turning it off), so I disable it. They were cool with it.
So disabling gameguard isn't a deadly sin. Besides you can always tell your players to "go find a gameguard crack" and you won't be responsible if they disable it because you don't link or host any illegal files.
If you have problems, FIRST TRY SOLVING THEM YOURSELF, and if you get errors, TRY TO ANALYZE THEM, and ONLY if you can't help it, THEN ask here.
Otherwise you will never learn anything if all you do is copy-paste!
Discussion breeds innovation.
