Hello, I have currently been hosting a L2j server on my home PC, just for testing around and getting a better feel of java, but now I want to move it onto a VPS, but I want some advice please, i found a site in my price range but not sure if the specs are good enough to handle an L2j server, I am looking at the $39.00/month server (Virtual Server II) can I please have some opinions, is that good enough to run a server with at least 500 connections?
Heres the exact link:
http://order.1and1.com/xml/order/Virtua ... tualServer
PS: I'm iffy on the ram. It says 1GB, and 'Burstable ram" up to 2GB. So all in all, is it 2GB generally? I don't understand "Burstable".
PSS: I don't know if this matters, but I plan to run an interlude server, dunno if that takes less RAM, or not???
Thanks for reading, and I hope for some feedback.

That kind of vps it's not good enough for run any game server where latency mathers.
It's one big server with up to 30 guest (or more), your server will lag all the time.
U need a hybrid server (same concept as a vps but with a low count of gest per host), or a dedicated server.
For low but great dedicated i would recommend u hetzner.

How's with performance there? And most of all - hardware failures? I'm planning to find something else - machine at OVH im renting have constantly problems. Once both disks died (took them 1 week to place new!!!!), ocassionally it gets random, hard reboot, magic things sometimes happen with code that easlier was tested for like 2 weeks on my home pc... I've stopped believeing in coincidence some time ago...

i have few servers in ovh from 5 or even more years. no problems at all, so its just bad luck for you. hetzner is also good, friends have some servers there.

It's my 4th server in ovh. Ones before were ok. But nvm with the luck. One week to change 2 sata disks, connected to desktop pc main board... I prefer even to pay more for worse machine, than go through what I think was simple "go-f*-uself" attitude. Those disks were dying for like 4 days u know... After 2nd day of random, 2 min lags, sudden reboots, going through like half of code looking for problems that weren't there, then running hardware diagnostics... I've informed them whats going on. Didn't got any response, till I've called them, once finally server dissapeared :/
//EDIT: Lol just remembered how it all even begun. Problems were even before I got last server. After paying installation fees, I was forced to wait 3 weeks for dedicated machine (don't wanna even mention that at the time I was renting It, it's stated on their web page that they have 8 available servers during next 3 hours...). Whats more funny - was pretty hard for me to convince them, to extend old server (that was rented in ovh too) period untill they bring new one. They even were talking sth about me paying rent for old server for another month... I dunno how's other doing with them, I just have pretty enough
But to make the whole picture, I'm happy with their virtual hosting. Cheap, fast enough, with amount of space I probably won't use in 50%... It's ok.

there was a delay once with new server setup because they have no SSD disc for new machines, so probably you also buy ssd

i remember that problem was when they start that offer, fast out of ssd disc and they cannot buy new ones, there is a thread on their forum about it. i also w8 then week or two. my friend have problems with server there, whole week server just crash & reboot without reason, support say only about power problem, disc problem, sata problem, or other hardware related problem. friend just make order for new one and transfer paytime from old one, so he loose money only for few days. new one works without any problems. but it was two or more years ago so then setup was for free, now they also get money for setup. As i say, i never have problem with servers there, sometimes with routing to ovh, but its very rare problem. Cannot say bad word.

Hmm, for a minute you confused me, that's maybe that's right. I can check it, but really doub that in my server sit two 1TB SSD disks

Same here. If your OVH server is going wrong, the best is to leave it and hire a new one xD
You will save time and money, believe me.

Thanks for the replies, I'm looking into OVH, it seems to be the best deal, although hearing all the problems you guys had from them, I'm still iffy about them

I've spent some good hour or 2 today, browsing through dedicated servers offers I've found, and it's surreal to me even more than in the past. I dunno when companies that rent servers stopped thinking, but... In my situation, when I will need server for the least next 2 years, renting actually slower dedic than my home PC... Thats a load of money to buy almost 2 desktop PCs of equal or higher performance than that dedic LOL. I was stunned - prices and offers in OVH seem very much the same like year or 2 ago. Only CPU names change, but really... what do I need a SSE632553 capable CPU to run java on, since I really doub that it will make any difference against equal core count, older CPU with SSE2 or 3... Actually It's a good news. No more renting for me probably. I think I'll just buy a higher-mid range desktop PC

and spend the rest on treating myself for instance with a year supply of a beer

the first share meant for beer will probably go for a good router though, unless you'll use some hosting near your home (there are those that allow you to plug in your own PC, at least in my country).
