Noob question about messagetype

Hi there!
I could not find any topc answering this, and I don't know which category would fit to this type of question, so I ask it here:
There is a "int messagetype" parameter in creaturesay/npcsay functions, which is 0 in every place where I saw the function called. But I could not figure it out, what it stands for, and what other ids may be used....
Can someone help me, at least with some info where to search for this?
