Magic quests problem

Can someone give me advice to get around this problem that some people are having please? I haven't got clue as to how to advise them in game, or if I should change anything ... or ... um ... help!
However there were a few things that need looking at.

I made a cleric, lvl 40 with all the skills available to her from a priest, only geting the ones I could buy spellbooks in gludio for.

I also gave her the same weapon and shots (Doom Hammer. D Grade) to try and replicate the problem as closely as possible.

Going out to the Crimson Werewolf (the quest monster in the southern immortal plateau, orc island) I couldn't hit it for more than 1 damage with wind strike, ice bolt or vampiric touch, the 3 main magic attack spells a prophet has (Disrupt Undead doesn't cast on these mobs).

At 39/40 these quest mobs are green to me, so even with low magic spells I should at least get one or two hits in every now and then, but I ran around for a good 5 minutes trying, and still only ever hit for 1.

I know low lvl magic spells are set to fail against the higher lvl mobs, but with this quest requiring you to use magic on certain mobs you might want to see if you can modify the m.def of all the mobs concerned to make things a bit easier for anyone else doing the quest?

clerics do not get any damage spells except Disrupt Undead and they aren't supposed to use nukes.
The quest text does not require you to kill the werewolf with magic but to help the ol mahum stay alive with your buffs and heals (so that for the werewolf it will look like the ol mahum is the stronger one :) ). But you can also kill him with weapons.

the quest text is somthing like this (not the exact words):
"Either help us secretly with your magic from the back or attack him directly to take him out with one blow."

iirc the werewolf vanishes on retail if you need too many hits to kill him. but you should try to get the last hit! best way on retail is to first buff/heal the pilgrim and start hitting when the werewolf is close to dieing.

it's the: "learn to be the buffer" quest.
