Computer spec
hi guys..
ive been thinking this over for a while now and thought i would come to the forums and get your opinion..
im not actully sure if i can host a server i know ive tryed hosting some more computer dependent games before and they went wrong so im not sure if i should continue on my project or just give up now...
my plan is when im hosting a server in BETA it will be on my pc ( when its finished on host on dedi)
but i still want ppl to enjoy the BETA testing otherwise when it is finished wont be popular at all
anyways my spec are as follows:
Intel Core Duo CPU E7300 @ 2.66GHz < mayby clock to 2.8ghz - 3.0ghz not sure yet >
3.25 GB RAM DDR2 < i have 4GB but i think mines capped at 3.25 :S
500GB HDD 16MB cache 7200rpm < i know its slow
10mb connection <nothing special just a standard TV company broadband
also my server will be capped at 100 ppl for beta test ( if i can get 100 ppl to play + depending on if you guys think its worth it)
thank you Melroth

Tbh ur HDD and Inet will be to slow. And seeing ur post u dont have much knowledge about hardware at all. Its recommand that you dont run the server and play l2 on same pc especially not with those specs.

imo: get a dedicated server and host the beta there, you won't get very far otherwise

Re: Computer spec
ive got some knowledge just not with dealing with some errors ;p
thx anyways guys
and the reason i want to do the BETA on my pc before i make it live is because i dont wanna buy a server have loads of problems and waste money on wasted days cause im busy working on fixing the problems.
but ya i plan on updating my internet to 24mb soon anyways but just want to know if my pc could handle it presently
thank you

Re: Computer spec
well it could handle it, but not many people and only if the server is the ONLY program running on that PC, if you launch anything that consumes resources, including bandwidth, than it will probably affect performance enough for players to notice
should handle solo testing easily, unless you have like 50 processes in task manager

If you have problems, FIRST TRY SOLVING THEM YOURSELF, and if you get errors, TRY TO ANALYZE THEM, and ONLY if you can't help it, THEN ask here.

Uhm...no ?Danoontje wrote:Tbh ur HDD and Inet will be to slow. And seeing ur post u dont have much knowledge about hardware at all. Its recommand that you dont run the server and play l2 on same pc especially not with those specs.
When I ran a server back in the days, I barely hit 5Mbps with over 300 players online.
HD doesn't matter that much, the RAM will reach it bottleneck long before you get I/O problems.

Re: Computer spec
Cant you built a dedicated pc at home for beta testing? Doesnt have to cost mutch, saves you costs from a dedicated host and since it's in your home you can easily connect to it.

Re: Computer spec
small "test" i had. Running it on a WD raptor 10k RPM disk or 2x 640GB 7.2k RPM in raid0!!! the raptor was roughly 25% FASTER in almost everything. U dont have enormous i/O no but the raptor can do way more concurrent i/O making everything load much faster.Eragon wrote:Uhm...no ?Danoontje wrote:Tbh ur HDD and Inet will be to slow. About the ram my serv used 500MB at all times. for testing purposes only ofc.

Start to get players on it, and come back when you reach 300-400 players+
Both CPU and HD I/O will not hit the bottle neck, RAM will long before either of it does.
What sort of Raptor was it ? And what sort of Sata2 disks where you running in raid 0 ? Was it software or hardware raid ?
With a good PCI sloted raid card, any 7.200 RPM disks in Raid 0, 10 or 100, will beat the living crap out of any 10k or 15k single disks.

Re: Computer spec
Kinda contradicting what u are saying now.
Both the 150GB SATA2 10k raptor as the 2 7.2k drives where on the same controller a ICH8R. For your knowlegde the 7.2k are WD 6400AAKS which are midrange/performance drives.
Ur syaing a "good pci card" i think u mean a raidcontroller which u dont want on PCI but thats a other thing. Will indeed have a positive effect on the use of 7.2k disk. BUT a good one will cost you 300 eur minimum with 2 to 4 disk ur looking at a setup which will cost you 500 eur then i got a x terabyte storage for my tiny l2 server.
I could do the same and do 1 or 2 raptors in raid and have about the same performance for half the price. As the 150GBraptors go for about 100eur here.
Point is, you dont need seqeuntial read/write offered by the raid 0. L2 servers rely on random read/write and more concurrent i/o to have a performance boost. And still the disk who provide that are 10k/15k or the new SSD which makes me jummie for even looking at those.
o btw i got 8GB ram, if i use up 8GB or ram for a server with under 300 players where doing smth really wrong. And i agree on you letting ram cache everything will reduce wear on harddrives but there still very neccesary.

Re: Computer spec
A Raid controller goes onto a PCI Slot...where else do you plan on putting it ? Stab it down till it fits ?
Good, we agree on the RAM. HD's are a major waste when only running an L2j server on it, 1 single 7.2k RPM disk will be more than enough for many many players.
Of course, you can tweak it all, BIOS, OS, Mysql, etc.
Meh, I'm jumping between subjects here xD

Re: Computer spec
u know PCI has a limited bandwith right? smth in the order of 55MB/s out of my head.
U got lots of high end raidcontrollers which fit in PCI-X 1x/4x or in PCI-Express (graphic card holder). PCI-X 1x does 250MB/s and in v2 even 500MB/s. Now you wont pull 55MB/s with a l2 server ofc not but just saying there are alot more options for it.
EDIT: im talkin bout the MuSQL and l2 server on same server ofcourse as most wont purschase 2 servers at the beginning.

Yea, you are right, I wasn't thinking about what I wrote there. with PCI I mean all the different slots, pci-e, etc.

Re: Computer spec
I am currently testing l2j server... on my single-core 3Gig RAM Vista Home Basic cheapo laptop at home (broadband cable).
It is also running Apache and an FTP server atm ....
... now I only have a few select friends helping me run around and profile the changes I want to make so it plays very well... no lag whatsoever.
I do not know how many people it would take to start bogging it down and it doesnt matter since this is not the computer the server will be running on if I take it live.
SO the long and short of it is... the server will "run" on just about any machine... how powerful the cpu and the connection needs to be is dependent on the number of users.. IMHO
Hope this helps you.

There are many factors to consider. Website visits, downloads, databases, forum(if you have one), etc.
The one I found to consume most was the actual patcher downloader and my website/forum.
