Some Tips for Newbies and not only. [UPDATED]

Somethings i am gonna say on this topic may sound obvious but trust me they are essential for working on a server and make the best of it. Let me start.

1st. Do Research.
Before you start a server you must play on a server. Spend sometime joining other servers and see what makes them so popular. You may find yourself comming up with better ideas.

2nd. Know your source.
You must spend sometime playing around with the server configs and code. Familirize yourself with it.

3nd. Learn a programming language.
If you dont allready know one i strongly suggest to learn do so. Even simple html and javascript helps you very much in the beggining. You may consider learn JAVA sometime in the future.

4th. Make a Plan.
Get a piece of paper and write down your ideas. It will help you stay focused on your ideas.

5th. Make a Team.
Gather up people you can trust for your Team. Make clear to them that your ideas are final but be open to suggestions.

6th. Organize your time.
Work on your server for a limited time per day. 1 to 2 Hours per day are more than enough to get something done. Dont spend to much time working or you will get fatigued and quit. You must also take frequent brakes.

7th. Learn using Linux.
If you are going serious and wanna save some money learn linux. Even the basic commands will help you a lot. So i recomend to install ubuntu and start messing around with the command line.

8th. Less is more.
Keep it simple, dont add to much customs or to much farming, people always get bored when they see no lifers own the server and NCZ0ft already added to much stuff to worrie about. Ask your self how it would be if you were a player on this server.


Thats all for now, if i think of anything else i will add it. You may also suggest a few things from your personal experience. All the above are my opinion it doesnt mean you have to follow it by letter. Thanks for reading.

Common Knowledge of Lineage 2!

if you dont have this, dont make a server, go learn on retail about the game, or a off server.... or something, even read the L2 website, if your players know more about L2 then you, that is not good, and ofc the more knowledge the better.

If you like to run a server from your house know this:
The most important is your connection with internet. An ADSL connection with 1Mbps upload can handle from 50 to 90 people depending on the interaction, config settings and your database ofcourse (for example if you run a pvp server, you can delete all the useless drops and keep only adena).
The next important thing is your PC. The most important of the PC configuration is HDD and RAM. SSD or 15k RPM HDD is recomended and over 4GB of RAM. Last the CPU, Dual Core and above.
MySQL optimization is a must, by making the proper setting your server performance will increase dramaticly.
Last, if you have dynamic ip, you can use a free DNS that will be updated frequently.

P.S.: Never run the game from the same PC that is hosting the server

I have 2 years with my server, spending a mean of 5 hours (my university career has been a bit broken for that, but I don't care, to do a server teaches a lot more than an informatics career), and I'm still here, this summer spending like 10-14 daily hours without getting tired of it.
So for me, point 6 would be "Do it with love" ^^

PROtips:

1. Running a Server is not for people with no-computer knowledge.
   Take your time to investigate and learn, investigate, learn... <repeat until > if you dont have time to learn, then hire someone or forget about setting up a server, things always go wrong if you skip that step.
2. Contribute, And Ye Shall Receive.
   Helping others and contributing information helps you to create a online reputation on forums, reputable member topics are always taken in consideration by other users most than the rest, helping others is the best way to help yourself.
3. Keep L2j out of reach of children.
   L2j is a complex server software, kids shouldnt be trying to use it, unless they know what are they doing, setting up a gameserver and playing in a server are two different situations, the first requires quite a bit of informatics knowledge <refer to #1> while the second one just require fast-clicking skills.

why not to say thanks to people who are trying to help? i think also that counts. maybe you will get another idea how to fix your problem thanks to such help. better some help than no help at all or only flame and blame.
but yeah, you are partially right, flooding forum with "thanks" posts is useless until you really tried the provided fix. better reply with an already checked fix, if it worked, if you had other problems, etc. do not make useless posts and do not post hunt.
do not blame ppl that are trying to help, because it is your problem and not theirs and they are taking their time to help you with your problem. try also by yourself if their help is not enough for you.

better tip for forum would be to search and to try and to use own brain. check jurchiks signature.

I am kinda new in the Lineage2 world^^
Playing the game for over 5 weeks now and working on a pserver for over 3 weeks now o.O
Best thing is for me to try a game first as a player, understand the gameplay and different systems like i did for 2 weeks.
After that ill started to work with my friend on his pserver he showed me the basics of the GM menu and some basics how to connect to the database etc.
First i made some GM shops and multisell files, after that modded some existing npcs / changing server settings / droprates etc.
Everything with java is still forbidden cause i only know java script so ^.^

So @ all i can say first play the game / than try easy things as GameMaster / after that get basics done in .xml or html files. (Tip: open existing files to READ and not to change them to understand what is written down there).
Easier if u have someone who allready has more than basic knowledge with lineage2.
In the end try to understand some basics of java which should take severall months @ last

P.S. i started with java allready cause got an idea but unfortunatelly i am not allowed to make some requests cause of the minimum post requirements. would be cool if any Dev can send me PM to talk about my idea...
