15.000 RPM HDD vs SSD Flash Drives

Post by momo61 »

This is not an off-topic discussion, but an on-topic discussion regarding the creation of a server.

For quite a while now, almost every decent L2J Server Dev or Server Owner claims that a decent storage for your files, for your gameserver and for your MySQL server often decides wether your server is good or if it lags.

And there seems to be a general belief that a regular 15k RPM HDD is the best, however, lately, I've spotted and read about the fairly new SSD Flash Disks which are supposed to be way faster than regular HDDs.

Also, you are supposed to be able to combine a regular HDD with a SSD which will improve performance drastically and increase the lifetime of a HDD by a whole lot.

Now the question is, is it any good ? How does this affect an L2J Server ? Could an L2J Server maybe hold even more players now than before ? What does this mean for the future ?

If anyone has an opinion or has experience with this, feel free to share it. I'm sure a lot of people would like to hear about it.

Happy Spamming,

Yes to your question it will drastically increase the performance of the server and yes it will "reduce" the lagg if there is anyone. If you don't have enough money then I would recommend that you use SSD for OS and SQL server and other hdd for login/gs.

However if you do have enough space in your SSD I recommend to for sure use it. It will greatly increase and make it a lot better.

What it means for the future? Less laggy server due to crappy Hdd's,Less loss of data. About it holding even more players is not always due to the computer it is often due to the configuration of your SQl, threadpools etc etc. Configuration is the nr1 key. Also there is a lot of crappy coding in the core which needs to be corrected to make it more performance efficient and memory allocated.

But yes use SSD instead of 15k rpm hdd

I'd love to use it, but right now it seems that the most server hosting companies don't offer SSD systems which is a bummer :s
Heck, most companies don't even offer 15k RPM HDDs.

But, I'd gladly pay a hosting company an extra setup fee or something just to get an SSD.

Well I know there are "hosting" companies that let you have your own pc at their place and all you pay is for a spot on their bandwidth and of course the location. Which I think is cheaper than paying for the full server. So if you have money build your own server PC and find 1 of those companies that offer those things. I had 1 in my favorites but I apparently dont have anymore so cannot give you link sorry.

wtf is your problem ?

I'm asking people on the forum if they can recommend a good server-hosting company, not which ones exist on google, since I'm sure a lot of people on this community know about some really good and decent server hosting companies.

Why did you even post Aikimaniac ? To increase your post count or make people like blacksea laugh ?
But hey, I guess this is your best input for the community for a week ("use fucking google").
