L2J server machine

Post by dark911_ro »

Question about server machine . What do you think of this ?
How many player will max support without lag.

2 x Intel Quad Core Xeon 3.0 Ghz processors
16 or 32 GB Ram DDR 3 1333 ECC Triple channel - not decided yet
2 x 500 GB SATA 3 HDD - RAID - 0
OS : I think will be win 2008 RC2 server & Mysql 5.1 or 5.5
10MB guaranteed dedicated connection for external players / 100 MB for internal players

Server connection is a problem in my opinion, also i would check if it has a good carrier before i select that connection. System OS is not the one i would suggest, as a clean Linux install, without any X-derivated desktop uses less memory.
Mysql increase its performance if you install it on a disk away from system os/server install.

What i would do? Increase bandwith to 1GB/s, install server itsel onf a SSD disk and raid for mysql. SSD i've tried till now are a bad idea for mysql, as they fail just too much. Thats my opinion, other guys can have its own :P

(With 10 Mb i would not launch a server, so will not say you how many players)

Increase connection to 1GB/sec will be a problem because the price .... as server will be hosted on own machine not in some datacenter.

I dont know if anyone really can afford 1Gb/sec guaranteed connection imagine that 50 Mb/ sec guaranteed external connection is arround 2k euro / month

L.E . typo .. it;s 10 MB not Mb :)

A dedicated server on a datacenter is cheaper than you imagine. On Hetzner.de you can have a medium server from 50€ each month. If you plan to open a really serious server i would select this.
If you just plan to open a server for friends, you spec is really nice. You can also select to start with your own machine and check lately to migrate to a dedicated.

Still , i'm not convinced why i should go to some data center instead having own box.
There's nothing special they offer... maybe some extra bandwidth.

maybe it's 12.5MB/s = 100Mbps?
If you have problems, FIRST TRY SOLVING THEM YOURSELF, and if you get errors, TRY TO ANALYZE THEM, and ONLY if you can't help it, THEN ask here.
Otherwise you will never learn anything if all you do is copy-paste!

In romania the internet providers do a very lame thing to get your money ... They "split" the bandwidth in 2 with diff prices.

EX :
-Inside country ( for most of them that means only inside you town ... ) they offer 100MB / sec
-Outside country ( that means all connections from outside romania ) they offer packets from 1MB / sec till 50 - 60MB/sec

Prices are something like : 1 MB / sec = 50 euro/month and 50 - 60MB / sec = over 3k euro / month and that's only for download speed. Upload is another story ....

Anyway .. about l2j , how much bandwidth you need for ... idk , let's say 1k players ? Upload and download.
